ACOM 2000a troubleshooting
The problems I was experiencing have been resolved. I wish to thank all who contributed their ideas. I would specially like to thank Will at ACOM for his help. As Will stated he just wants a happy customer and I could not be more happy with the service he and the company provided. One more individual who provided a great many suggestions was Adam VA7OJ. He gave me many ideas in how to approach the problem. Finally my friend Jim W7EJ who spent hours with me on Skype as we ran different tests.
The original problem was a Protection ARC Fault or a Protection Low Gain Fault. Both of these appeared to be intertwined. ACOM went through the amplifier and did not find anything after extensive testing. Per Will's suggestion when I received the amplifier back I replaced the RF drive cable from the ICOM Pro III to the amp. As in the past I placed several Type 31 ferrite beads on both the input and the output to the amplifier. Now I also added the ferrite beads to the 240v power cord and the keying line to the amp.
A very important step was to first retune my SteppIR antenna on each band. Then I retuned the amplifier for each band segment. At this point I could not get the amplifier to fail. Nor did I want it to fail!
Now for a couple of tips I picked up:
Want to know how many hours on your Acom 2000A? With the power switch on in the Amplifier but the remote control unit power off hit <Enter>. Read the number of hours on your amp.
Want to reset the amplifier to factory defaults? Perform step above because once you do this the hours get set to 0. Then turn off the power switch at the amp. Hold down the <ESC> on the RCU and turn the main power switch on the amp at the same time.
